Congratulations to our 2016 SLA-SD Scholarship Recipient – Ana Bellini!

We are please to announce that Ana Bellini is the recipient of the SLA-SD 2016 scholarship.

Ana is in her final semester of the MLIS program at the iSchool, San Jose State University.  She has a BA in Film and Visual Culture from the University of California, Riverside. After many years of working in fundraising and marketing for nonprofits in San Diego, she switched careers to focus on her schooling and family. She has experience working in a public library and is currently working as the Medical Library Technician at Scripps Mercy’s Health Science Library.

Ana has also agreed to serve as 2017’s SLA-SD Chapter Student Liaison and looks forward to being involved with the Chapter’s work.

Thank you for being involved Ana and we welcome you to SLA-SD.

Congratulations to our 2015 SLA-SD Scholarship Recipient!

We’re very pleased to announce that Sharesly Rodriguez is the recipient of the SLA-SD 2015 Scholarship!

Sharesly is pursuing her MLIS degree at the iSchool, San Jose State University.  She is a recent graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz, with a BA in Legal Studies and Sociology.  She has experience working in a variety of library settings, including academic and law libraries, and public records archives.

In addition to a busy school and work schedule, Sharesly has agreed to serve as the SLA-SD Chapter Student Liaison for 2016.  Thanks, Sharesly, and welcome!

Introducing….SLA-San Diego 2016 Executive Board

Meet the incoming members of the SLA-San Diego 2016 Executive Board:

Chapter President: Britt Mueller (Principal, InfoLiquidity)

Britt Mueller is Principal of the consulting organization, InfoLiquidity, which seeks to optimize the flow and financial return on information for content creators, consumers, and organizations. Before she established InfoLiquidity, Britt was Sr. Director and lead for the Library & Information Services department for Qualcomm Inc., a global Fortune 500 company focused on advanced wireless technologies. Her group served an employee population of over 30,000, providing just-in-time, globally accessible information, research and analysis toward increased productivity and competitive advantage. Before Qualcomm, Britt headed the corporate library for a HR consulting firm, and served as a faculty librarian at the University of Oregon. She is a long-time member of the Special Libraries Association and served a prior term as President of the San Diego chapter in 2011. Britt has served on numerous advisory councils, is a former member of the ITIMG (Industrial Technical Information Managers Group), and has authored a number of papers and presentations on meeting information needs in research and corporate environments.

President-Elect: Greg Sorini (Manager, Library Services, Qualcomm)

Greg Sorini manages the enterprise content portfolio at Qualcomm where he began his library career in 1997. A graduate of San Jose State’s MLS program, Greg began as a library intern working on the implementation of the Qualcomm Library’s first ILS.  Since then he has managed the technical services team, been part of the Library’s research team, and been an integral part of relocating the Library three times. In his current role, Greg manages the Library’s content budget and ensures that Qualcomm’s information portfolio meets the needs of the company as it evolves.  He is a past SLA-SD Fall Seminar Director and is looking forward to re-engaging with local colleagues.

Treasurer: Jennifer Silverman (Assistant Librarian, West Coast University)

Jennifer Silverman is Assistant Librarian for the Orange County Campus of West Coast University in Anaheim, CA.  Jennifer began her work in libraries as a Library Student Assistant with San Diego State University in 2006. Her library experience includes: cataloging items and conducting outreach at the San Diego Zoo Library, providing reference and research services at the Rancho Bernardo Library for the City of San Diego, and volunteering at the Temple Adat Shalom Library.  Jennifer has been serving as SLA-SD’s Treasurer since 2014 and is looking forward to another two years as a member of the executive board.

Secretary: Teri Vogel (Science and Engineering Librarian, University of California, San Diego)

Teri has been the librarian for Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical and NanoEngineering  at UC San Diego for 10 years, and before that was the Chemistry and Biology Librarian at Georgia State University. She first got involved with SLA through the Chemistry Division, first as webmaster from 2002-2008, and then as Chair-Elect/Chair/Past-Chair from 2009-2011. More recently, Teri has been involved with the American Chemical Society’s Division of Chemical Information as a member of the Education Committee and Bulletin assistant editor.

Director: Zemirah Lee (User Engagement Librarian, National University)

Zemirah Lee joined SLA-SD in 2011 as a student while completing her MLIS from San Jose State University. She served on the Advisory Committee in 2013 as the new Student Liaison after winning the SLA-San Diego Student Scholarship just prior to graduating with her degree in 2014. She immediately secured a position at UC Irvine as an Education & Outreach Librarian before coming back home to San Diego to work at the National University Library as the Health and Human Services Librarian. In addition to her active local involvement with SLA-SD, Zem is also on the Executive Board of the Southern California Instruction Librarians and has been a continuous member of ALA, CARL, ACRL and SLA since 2011.

Director: Beth Autin (Librarian, San Diego Public Library and San Diego Zoo Global)

Beth first joined SLA in 1998 and served as SLA-SD Membership Chair from 2006-2008. She is very excited to be back on the SLA-SD Board, serving as one of our two Directors, and welcomes your Fall Seminar ideas! Beth has over 15 years of experience helping organizations efficiently access and manage information. Her variety of career experiences includes working as a librarian in biotech companies, law firms, public libraries and as an independent information consultant to the pharmaceutical, medical device and diagnostics industries. She joined the library team at San Diego Zoo Global in 2015 and is currently Associate Director – Library Services.

On behalf of the 2015 Nominating Committee, thanks to our nominees for agreeing to serve, and we look forward to an exciting year!

Are you eager to learn concepts, tools, and methods to optimize user experience (UX) and satisfaction at your library or information service? Please join the Special Libraries Association, San Diego, at our annual fall seminar. Outstanding speakers from a variety of settings will share insights, real-life examples, and practical tips on UX for information professionals. Attendees will also have opportunities to explore a vendor showcase, hear short vendor presentations, and enjoy a delicious continental breakfast, box lunch, and snacks catered by Panera Bread.

Intentionally principled planning was the key to success in a minimal-budget transformation of the SDSU reference services area in 2012, improving user experience with state-of-the-art technology and study spaces. Linda will review the process and lead us in a mini planning and design exercise.

10:45 – 11:45  Designing Mobile Services: Two Innovative Case Studies from UC San Diego

Marlo Young, MLS; Virtual Education Coordinator, University of California, San Diego

SuHui and Marlo will review the recent UX-optimized design of a mobile website for the UCSD Library and the use of a social location-based mobile platform to design an interactive orientation to the library and core services. The presentation will cover the development cycle, metrics, and lessons learned.

Ambassador Program

Jackie Davis, MLIS, Health Librarian, Sharp HealthCare

The Health Information Ambassador Program is a librarian-volunteer partnership designed to deliver accurate information to patients at the bedside. Jackie will describe the program and share qualitative and quantitative data that demonstrate the benefits of this innovative, patient-centered approach.

2:15 – 3:00     Building a User-Centric Website by Integrating Course Enrollment Data

Ian Chan, MLS, Web Development Librarian, California State University, San Marcos

The CSUSM Library integrates course enrollment data within its web site to provide students with a targeted research experience. Ian will describe data selection and extraction, the use of Drupal to generate a customized user profile, privacy issues, and ways to safeguard student information.

3:00 – 3:35     Creating and Marketing Research Guides with the User in Mind

Catherine A. Deane, JD, MA, MLIS, Reference Librarian, Thomas Jefferson School of Law

Catherine will present her winning methods for creating and marketing research guides, with a focus on usability and marketing to students. These methods will be applied in a group exercise to analyze and propose improvements to a selection of research guides provided by seminar attendees.

Final call! August 17th is the last day to submit a presentation proposal for our October 5th SLA-SD Fall Seminar, “Spotlight on the User” (Call for Speakers). Have you made a change to your website, physical space, services, or programs to make the experience more user-friendly? Please share what you’ve learned from the process! You won’t want to miss this seminar–we have a dynamic keynote speaker, Gretchen McNeely, who will give us an overview, tools, and specific case studies to help us optimize user/customer experience in our libraries and organizations.
