Reminder: SLA-SD Event; Asafo Flags @ Mingei International Museum 3/22/16

Join us for an intriguing look at a very unique exhibit, the Asafo Flags from Ghana at the Mingei International Museum in Balboa Park.  This is an exhibition of thirty-seven flags from the West African country of Ghana. A recent donation to Mingei International, these colorful flags dating to the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries feature graphic imagery and appliqued designs on solid cotton grounds. More details on the exhibit can be found on the Mingei website.

The tour will begin with a brief introduction from the Curator and Director of Exhibitions Christine Knoke Hietbrink and continue with an in-depth look at selected works with a Museum docent. This will be followed by a tour of the Museum’s Frances Hamilton White Art Reference Library where Chapter Hospitality Chair Kristi Ehrig-Burgess will discuss how archives and digitization projects relate to the Museum’s collections and Mission.  The event is free to all attendees.

Afterwards gather at Panama 66 at the SD Museum of Art next door for a no-host happy hour.

Distance Education Librarian – Part Time — Bridgepoint Education, San Diego, CA

Management Assistant (Analysis) (OA)– Department of Veterans Affairs, San Diego, CA

The Management Assistant actively assists the Veterans Service Center Manager (VSCM) by performing administrative and technical work and independently resolving problems associated with the administrative and operations functions of the Veterans Service Center (VSC). Specific duties include:

  • Controls and prepares recurring and special reports, studies, and analyses as may be required by the VSCM/AVSCM.
  • Completes all requests for system access, deletions and changes for the VSC employees.
  • Maintains files of correspondence, official issues, laws, regulations, decisions, local and Central Office reports; acts as a Veteran Service Center librarian, and in the capacity, keeps administrative and reference material current; also responsible for VSC division timecards.
  • Communicates personally, in writing, by e-mail and over the telephone with the general public, congressional officials, travel agents, training coordinators, management staff, and other VARO employees.
  • Assists with the preparation of all VSC employee travel and data maintenance of VSC employee travel budgets. Serves as Locked File Custodian, responsible for maintenance, oversight, and daily control of Locked Files.
  • Maintains VSCM manuals, handbook, electronic record and folders, and other related materials to assures materials are readily retrievable.

The Management Assistant also performs administrative personnel functions for the Veterans Service Center, to include:

  • Maintains employee records;
  • Ensures timely completion and submission of placement follow-ups, within-grade certifications, and official time reports; initiates personnel action requests (SF 52);
  • Prepares overtime worksheets;
  • Updates and maintains organization and functional charts;
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive records and information;
  • Maintains position descriptions and performance standards;
  • Maintains a personnel listing of VSC employees and Cascade plans.

Work Schedule: Standard 5 day, 8 hour, full time (40 hours per week) schedule; Monday – Friday; 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM.

Surf Museum Tour Wrap up!

What a delightful time with colleagues! Our small group really got the most out of the tour and dinner gathering.  Our host and avid surfer, Kramer (pictured in the museum below), was full of knowledge and information to share about what it was like to surf with the greats!  He also gave us a wonderful walk through tour of the entire museum that serves as an international repository and resource center on the lifestyle sport of surfing. We viewed all the exhibits which included, Gems from the Vault, The Art of Kevin Short, A Brief History of Surfboards, and exhibits on both Bud Brown, Bethany Hamilton.  We were all amazed at the extent of the collection and the unique pieces that so many surfers have donated to the museum over the years.  Thanks for sharing in this wonderful event! Detailed Description
Copley Library seeks a part-time reference librarian to provide reference services to USD students, faculty, and staff. The part-time reference librarian will be responsible for providing both in-person and online reference assistance during assigned shifts at the reference services desk. This is an hourly position with the possibility of a maximum of 18 hours per week. This position reports directly to the Head of Reference Services.

Work Schedule:

This position includes two weekend shifts (Saturdays 11 am – 5 pm and Sundays 3-9 pm). Additional hours/shifts may be available depending on reference scheduling needs and candidate availability.

Job Requirements

  • ALA-accredited Masters degree in Library Science.
  • Experience providing reference services in an academic library.
  • Experience teaching the effective use of online and print research resources.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing reference services via chat, email, text message, and other virtual methods.
  • Experience using the LibAnswers online reference services platform.

Background check:   Successful completion of a pre-employment background check.

Principal Librarian, City of Escondido, Escondido, CA

Under administrative direction, assists the Deputy City Librarian and performs highly responsible administrative duties related to library functions; plans and oversees major library division activities including, but not limited to, Adult and Children’s Services; Media and Technical Services; and/or, Literacy Services and the Technology Center.   Assists the Director of Library and Community Services and the Deputy City Librarian in planning, organizing, and coordinating assigned activities with other departments, community agencies, support groups and the general public.  Supervises mid-management and technical staff in various classifications as assigned.

Assumes management responsibility for system-wide service and functional areas of the Library.  Plans, supervises, administers, coordinates, and evaluates the delivery of system-wide services and programs for assigned areas of responsibility.

Assumes responsibility for and directs the overall operations of assigned services, activities, and divisions for system-wide collection development, budget, facilities, space planning, services, and programming in multiple program areas.

Participates in the analysis, development, and implementation of strategic goals, objectives, work standards, work flow projects, and priorities.

Serves as a member of the Library’s management team.

Assures alignment of division-level goals and objectives with overarching Library and City goals.

Directs, coordinates and reviews the work plan for assigned professional, paraprofessional and clerical library staff and volunteers; assigns work activities and projects; monitors work flow; reviews and  evaluates work products, methods and procedures.  Reviews and participates in the resolution of personnel matters.

Meets with staff to identify and resolve problems and issues and identifies opportunities for improving service delivery methods, policy and operating procedures.

Participates in the development and administration of assigned program budget; forecasts, and identifies funds needed for staffing, equipment, materials, and supplies; monitors and approves expenditures within designated budgets and recommends adjustments as necessary.

Librarian/Compliance Officer (based in Copenhagen, Denmark), Niels Brock International – San Diego, CA

Niels Brock International is seeking a Librarian who can also fill the role of Accreditation Compliance Officer in our American Bachelor of Science Programs in Denmark and in Asia.
Niels Brock International provides an ACICS-accredited U.S. Bachelor of Science degree with majors in finance and marketing that are supported by a strong liberal arts curriculum (“the Program”).
The Program is being offered in Denmark and in a number of Asian countries (China, Vietnam, Myanmar and others). Instruction is in conducted in English, and it is a collaboration between Niels Brock International and our local partner universities. As a Librarian at the campus in Copenhagen, you will be required to:
(a) develop an adequate base of library resources for the Program;
(b) ensure means to access these resources;
(c) develop a continuous assessment strategy for library resources and information services;
(d) provide adequate staff to support library development, collection organization, and accessibility;
(e) ensure that library services are provided to all learners, including those at other campuses;
(f) provide teaching, training and encouragement for students and faculty to utilize library resources as an integral part of the learning process; and
(g) act as mentor to and colleagues with our local Librarians at other Program campuses.
The ability to work independently, as well as with a team consisting of faculty and students from all around the world, is imperative. The Program places a premium on good oral and written communications skills.
As a Compliance Officer, you will be required to check that all forms related to the accreditation process are complete, appropriately filed, and easily accessible to faculty and staff. Database and document management skills are therefore also essential to this position.
The Program has been running for several years in Asia. As of Autumn 2015, we will offer courses in Copenhagen, in addition to providing our students in Copenhagen and around the world with online-supported instruction for use in an onsite/online hybrid format. We are therefore also looking for a Librarian/Compliance Officer with online course experience.
About you
Librarian/Compliance Officer

  • A graduate degree from The Royal School of Library and Information Science at the University of Copenhagen (Det Informationsvidenskabelige Akademi, IVA) or an equivalent credential from the U.S. (MLIS)
  • Good communication skills in both oral and written English are required, with Danish language skills being highly recommended but not required.
  • Experience with and inclination for teaching students and faculty
  • Interest in working with every aspect of a running a Library
  • The ability to work both alone and in teams.
  • A great deal of empathy for and patience with students is a must, as is the ability to be firm in the face of unreasonable or inappropriate requests (regarding e.g., copyright violations).

Nice to have:

  • Experience in a similar position in an academic library or educational institution
  • Experience with Reindex or a similar library management system
  • Knowledge of the Danish Library System (DK5, Netpunkt, etc.)
  • Knowledge of common academic databases and license responsibilities.

Terms of employment
This position will be filled as soon as possible, and with background we seek, you will be receive a full-time faculty appointment.
Employment will be secured as per agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the AC trade union.

SLA-SD 2015 Fall Seminar Call For Speakers – Deadline Extended: Friday, 9/18!

We are still looking for more proposals for presentations at the upcoming SLA San Diego Chapter Fall Seminar on October 30thThe presentation proposal deadline has been extended to Friday, September 18th.

Have you developed a new library or information service and assessed the need or impact prior to or after implementation?  If so, we’d love to hear about how you did it.  All other proposals on the topics listed below are also welcome. Creative spins on these topics are encouraged as well! Please share with any colleagues who may be interested.


Forging Forward: Techniques & Technologies for Gauging Success

 SLA San Diego Chapter Fall Seminar — October 30, 2015

Call for Papers, Proposals Due 9/18/2015

The San Diego Chapter of the Special Libraries Association is seeking speakers for our annual professional development seminar to be held on Friday, October 30, 2015 at Marina Village Conference Center, Quivira Way, San Diego, CA 92109.

The 2015 theme is:  Forging Forward: Techniques & Technologies for Gauging Success


As the landscape of information services and resources changed from physical to digital and physical, how have librarians changed the ways in which we gauge success?  Learn new ways of measuring your customers’ or competitors’ research impact, your library services’ impacts in the digital age, and how to quantify and convey your organization’s successes to upper management.

We are looking for presentations that share knowledge and insights about the tools, methods, and skills that help us learn more about ways to contribute to organizational success. Presentations should cover the topic both conceptually and with demonstrations/discussion of real-world applications. Proposals may address, but are not limited to, the following topics as specifically focused on practices/concepts:

·         Altmetrics and other ways of evaluating researcher or organizational output and impact

·         Competitive intelligence

·         Visualizing organizational productivity

·         Communicating compelling stories with data

·         Information technology tools that uncover what our customers need to reach their goals

·         Collaborative efforts outside of the library

·         Adjusting library strategy to match organizational changes & challenges

·         Cost-effectiveness of investments in new information technologies

Proposals are requested from information professionals working in all types of environments; SLA membership is not required.  Proposals should include:

·         Speaker information: name(s), affiliation, contact information

·         Presentation description: a title and brief summary of your presentation (up to 500 words)

·         Format: individual speaker, team presentation, panel discussion, etc.

Presentations should be approximately 30-45 minutes in length.  Please submit your proposal to us at  by Tuesday, September 8 Friday, September 18, 2015. The seminar committee will select presentations the following week.

Many of you have expertise in one or more of the areas listed above, or know someone who does, and we encourage you to send us a proposal soon. If you have colleagues or others in your network who might be interested, please do let them know about this opportunity.  All proposals welcomed!
