Congratulations to our 2015 SLA-SD Scholarship Recipient!

We’re very pleased to announce that Sharesly Rodriguez is the recipient of the SLA-SD 2015 Scholarship!

Sharesly is pursuing her MLIS degree at the iSchool, San Jose State University.  She is a recent graduate of the University of California, Santa Cruz, with a BA in Legal Studies and Sociology.  She has experience working in a variety of library settings, including academic and law libraries, and public records archives.

In addition to a busy school and work schedule, Sharesly has agreed to serve as the SLA-SD Chapter Student Liaison for 2016.  Thanks, Sharesly, and welcome!

SLA-SD Scholarship Application due November 9th

A reminder to our students out there that the San Diego Chapter of the Special Libraries Association (SLA-SD) is accepting applications for our 2015 Student scholarship. The deadline is Monday, November 9, 2015, and the scholarship is for $1000 plus a one-year student membership in SLA-SD.The annual scholarship is awarded to a San Diego County resident currently enrolled in any ALA-accredited Master’s degree program.

If you are:

  • a resident of San Diego County
  • enrolled in an ALA-accredited Master’s degree program
  • interested in pursuing a career in special libraries.

To be considered, please submit:

  • a personal statement of 500-1000 words discussing your interest in special libraries and your future career goals
  • a current resume, which should include MLS/MLIS/MIS coursework you’ve completed to date and your anticipated graduation date.

Upon selection, the scholarship recipient must submit proof of enrollment in an ALA-accredited Master’s degree program (unofficial transcript) and proof of residency in San Diego County (copy of driver’s license or voter registration card).

The scholarship recipient will also be invited to join the SLA-SD Advisory Board as Student Liaison.

When registering for the one-year SLA student membership, the recipient MUST become an affiliated member of the San Diego Chapter of SLA.

To submit an application, please email your personal statement and resume (.doc(x) or PDF) attachments to m2slis13@gmail.com by November 9, 2015. Please use the subject line “SLA-SD Scholarship Application.”

The winner will be notified by late November. The scholarship will be officially awarded at the chapter’s Holiday Dinner in December.

SLA-SD 2014 Non-Profit Librarian Scholarship

The San Diego Chapter of the Special Libraries Association (SLA-SD) is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for a special 2014 scholarship for non-profit librarians. The purpose of the scholarship is threefold:

  1. to provide a one-year membership in SLA-SD;
  2. to cover the cost of attendance to the SLA-SD Fall Seminar (to be held on Friday, October 24, 2014);
  3. to encourage participation in SLA-SD governance by non-profit librarians.

The scholarship winner shall serve on an SLA-SD committee of their choice during 2014-15.

In order to qualify, applicants must:

  • be a resident of San Diego County
  • be employed as an information professional at a non-profit (or not-for-profit) organization

To be considered, applicants must submit:

  • a personal statement of up to 250 words discussing their interest in special libraries and how they would benefit from attending the SLA-SD fall seminar
  • a current resume

Upon selection, the recipient will be required to submit proof of residency in San Diego County (copy of driver’s license or voter registration card). To submit an application, send your personal statement and resume as PDF attachments to tmatlin(at)csusm(dot)edu by Monday, September 8, 2014. Please use the subject line “SLA-SD 2014 Non-Profit Librarian Scholarship Application.” The winner will be notified in late September. The scholarship will be officially awarded at the Fall Seminar.

Congratulations to 2014 SLA-SD Scholarship Recipient!

A big congratulations and welcome to Zemirah Lee, SLA-SD’s 2014 scholarship recipient! 

Zem works as a Project Manager on a federally funded research project studying young adult space practices in public libraries. She is also currently interning at Grossmont Community College. Her educational focus is on reference & instruction with an emphasis on information and digital literacy, instruction design and community outreach.

She holds a BA in English Literature from the University of California in San Diego and will be earning her Masters in Library and Information Sciences from San Jose State University this coming spring.

Congratulations to SLA-SD’s 2012 Scholarship Recipient!!

A big congratulations and welcome to Charlotte King, SLA-SD’s 2012 scholarship recipient! Charlotte is an Education Director for a health services not-for-profit in San Diego where she is developing their initiative to bring free health education courses to underserved communities. She also manages their health education lending library. photo(1)

Before relocating to California, Charlotte was a Program Officer with the Illinois Humanities Council (IHC.) While with the IHC, she organized a wide range of humanities and arts-based public programming and coordinated the initiative to bring their Meaning of Service discussion series to national audiences. Prior to joining the IHC, she worked as the Educational Outreach Director for Cinema/Chicago, where she expanded their Teachers Institute for Media Studies to include a monthly series of professional development workshops for Chicago Public School teachers.

 
She holds a B.A. in Women and Gender Studies with a concentration on women, culture, and the arts from DePaul University and is currently pursuing her Masters in Library and Information Sciences from San Jose State University.
