Dean of Libraries – Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (San Diego Campus)

Job Summary: The Dean of Libraries is responsible for leading, administering, planning and organizing the programs, collections, learning resources and daily functions of the College’s main San Diego library, and coordinates with the two branch librarians (New York and Chicago) on their campus programs. This position functions collaboratively with the College’s leadership team comprised of vice presidents, academic deans, faculty, managers, and Library Committee members to achieve the Library’s mission to support the acquisition, management, delivery of biomedical information, and to meet the needs of the educational, clinical and research programs. Active class room and online teaching is conducted each semester. This position oversees San Diego’s three part time Library assistants and Federal Work Study Library Assistants.

Minimum/Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library and/or information science from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Knowledge and experience of library computer systems, hardware and software.
  • Experience in communicating and maintaining relationships with external library professionals and business (publishing and information systems) leaders.
  • Experience in managing library budgets and related fiscal responsibilities.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in a senior leadership role in a library or related institution is required.
  • Experience obtained in a health sciences library, academic or special library.


Desired Qualifications:

  • PhD in library or information science
  • Post-graduate medical librarian certification from the Medical Library Association.
  • Continuing education credits in medical librarianship is preferred.
  • Teaching experience is highly desirable.
  • Experience in preparing and writing library reports for academic environments and accreditation reviews.
  • Experience in writing applications for library grants and/or contracts.
  • Experienced writer of scholarly publications and public speaker.
  • Demonstrated skill with disserations

Education and Experience:

A master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA accredited program required.

Leadership skills in managing libraries and performing supervisory roles.
