Volunteer Opportunity: Stacks Assistant, The San Diego Museum of Art Library

Reports to: Manager, Library & Archive

Position Overview: Assist library staff in maintaining book stacks

Specific Tasks:

  • Shelve newly cataloged materials, materials checked in after use by patrons, and materials used in library by patrons
  • Maintain shelves by periodically scanning books, periodicals and catalogs to ensure that they areĀ  shelved in proper order and re-shelving any that are out of order
  • Call to the attention of library staff any books that appear to be mis-cataloged, damaged, or in need of new labels
  • Photocopy ephemeral materials (newspaper or periodical articles) and prepare photocopies for filing in vertical files

Time Requirement: hours flexible; a minimum of four hours weekly is required to meet the workload

Qualifications:Physical: Ability to climb stairs and move heavy books on and off of shelves

Skills/Education/Experience: a fundamental knowledge of the Library of Congress call number system, general knowledge of art history (periods, styles, nomenclature), and good attention to detail; library work experience would be an asset.
