Market Manager, Sony Electronics San Diego


Sony Electronics (SEL) is the San Diego-based marketing arm of Sony Corporation, and whose mission is to sell all consumer and broadcast & professional electronics in the United States (with the exception of Sony Playstation).

The SEL Research & Innovation Center (RIC) reports into the Corporate Strategy Office. The RIC’s focus is to deliver consumer insights into all areas of the business to inform decision making related to marketing communications, retail activities, and product improvements. Additionally, the team is tasked with helping to foster a culture of innovation as well lead and drive innovation ideas throughout the organization.

The Position

The RIC Manager of Resource Management is responsible for developing the secondary/syndicated research foundation that can lead to important insights, and will be responsible for managing all RIC information resources and tools. This includes:

Understanding key learning objectives from SEL business units (Example: sales, marketing, and product management teams)

Identifying secondary research resources that match those learning needs

Syndicated research vendor management (examples: NPD, Forrester Research, etc.) including:

Evaluating potential research vendors

Negotiating and processing contracts and payments

Developing and executing a calendar that leverages vendor analysts against key topics (example: CES findings, New product launch findings, etc.)

-Managing all aspects of the RIC online library (My Research Portal)

Tagging articles/reports and post on the site

Populating the site with primary research conducted by the RIC

-Training SEL employees within various business units on how best to access the available information sources

-Overseeing all aspects of the RIC budget

Creating an annual budget plan

Driving the plans approval through the company

Managing an allocated research budget as well as staff SG&A costs on a monthly basis

Ensuring the team closes out the year on budget

-Coordinating RIC staff meetings and agenda

-Providing metrics measurement support

Who You Work With

This position will report into the Director of Research & Innovation Center and will work closely with the Sr. Analyst of Market Analysis, who will be a key person in pulling insights out of the available information. In turn, both those positions will work closely with Lead Researchers and Research Planners who are responsible for pulling the insights out of the available existing research. They will also be charged with developing subsequent primary research to fill in knowledge gaps.

The position will also help support the Manager of Metrics Research.

Additionally, the position will coordinate with different business unit leaders to understand their learning objectives, particularly as it relates to ongoing syndicated research needs. And it will help train others particularly outside the RIC on how to leverage the available tools.
